Prep work has begun on an affordable-rent apartment compex in Bayou Cane for lower- and middle-income families.

Bayou Cane Apartments will be located on Synergy Center Boulevard between Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Work is expected to be completed next year

The Terrebonne Parish Council approved the use of $5.7 million in Community Development Block Grant money for the development in July 2013. The project was later awarded to Renaissance Neighborhood Development Corp., a subsidiary of Volunteers of America.

Officials say the remainder of the project’s $13.5 million price tag will be covered by tax credits.

Construction, which will be handled by Donahue Favret Contractors Inc., is expected to be complete by spring 2015. Apartments are expected to be ready for occupancy by early summer 2015.
